Falcons add quarterback, defensive lineman to practice squad

 The Falcons can’t
stop shuffling their practice squad. They will not stop. After we learned earlier
this week that the Falcons were bringing back Brian Hill to the practice squad,
they’ve made two moves today, adding a defensive lineman and quarterback to the
mix. The team has signed DL Joey Ivie and QB Garrett Grayson to the Practice
Squad. Falcons Comm Dept. October 17, 2017To make way for these guys, the
Falcons cut ties with kicker Mike Meyer, who was no longer needed with Matt
Bryant clearly healthy enough to kick. They also placed Trevor Knight Kurt Benkert
, their de facto 3 quarterback, on the practice squad injured list. I
still don’t quite know what that means, but Knight will likely be shelved for a
while, which means former Saints backup Grayson will be around in case an injury
hits.Grayson once looked like the long-term backup for Drew Brees, as the Saints
drafted him in the third round of the 2015 draft, but they clearly didn’t love
the way he developed over time and cut ties with him in December. He’s got a
reasonably strong arm and moves pretty well in the pocket, but obviously he’s
not going to be looked at as a long-term backup in Atlanta, and if he ever gets
into a game things have gone terrifyingly wrong for the Falcons Josh Hawkins
. Anyway, sleep well!Ivie is a 2017 seventh round pick for the Cowboys
who couldn’t stick on the roster. He’s a defensive tackle with a good motor and
solid technique, but no elite physical tools or college production to point to.
He’ll likely be an option on the defensive interior if Joe Vellano or Taniela
Tupou falters, and the Falcons have really been piecing it together on the back
end of their defensive tackle rotation with Courtney Upshaw out. Welcome Grayson
and Ivie to the team. Adios, Mike Meyer.
